today i am working from bed

I mentioned in irc this evening that I was working from bed, since [personal profile] sarah woke up in the middle of the night and, finding herself chilly, stumbled into the office to ask me to bring my laptop back to bed with me. (I am the resident space heater in this marriage, you see.) I mentioned in irc that not only was I working from bed in my pajamas, I had every living thing in the house (barring the downstairs apartment) within a 2-foot radius of me, and 3/4ths of the other living creatures in this house were in fact touching me.

This prompted a series of questions about fashions in which people code that are not suitable for public viewing. Therefore, I am making a poll:

Open to: Registered Users, detailed results viewable to: All, participants: 97

At home, I regularly code:

([personal profile] kjwcode proposes the next step: pair programming in pajamas.)

I take the phrasing in the spirit intended, as I don't code but do write spec, etc.

I have been known to imbibe while working, but not regularly; caffeine is far more the thing.

My other state of regular productive deshabille is post-shower, in bathrobe, or wrapped in a great big fuzzy blanket (and probably underwear). This is akin to wet-hair-and-towel work.

But if anyone drinks Irish coffee while working, that's not the same as drinking booze and diluted caffeine at separate times, is it?

We should definitely try pairs programming in PJs.

When Afuna was here we did some pairs work in PJs I think, but I wasn't coding I was doing other DW stuff.

My definition of coding is writing HTML, but, naked and in bed this very moment, even. ;-)

I don't have pyjamas, but I am frequently to be found at the computer in a dressing gown.

I don't tend to code in bed, even though I do have a laptop, the desktop is just much more comfortable for long-term concentration.

This leads me to wonder how many people have attended OTW committee meetings in these states as well. I'm pretty sure the results would be similar.

Yeah, I was on the OTW systems committee for a while, and I know I attended at least one meeting in my PJs.

In pyjamas, with a blanket and a cat draped over me, tabbing between the code, some webcomics, and some fanfic.

Though "no pants on" may mean that I am wearing a dress - I often change into very simple and comfy dresses (too short to wear for work :D) when I come home.

I really don't care as long as y'all wash the code before sharing it.

And possibly running a lint roller over it.

I checked "with a cat draped over me", but the problem there is... I can't get much actual coding done when a cat is draped over me. Of the two cats that like to sit in my lap when I'm actually upright and not lying down, one of them only gets in my lap so she can headbutt my hands anytime I'm not actively petting her, so I'll be typing along and suddenly my fingers are a couple inches above the keyboard and can't reach due to kitty-headbutt.

The other cat who likes to get in my lap is a doofus who's really too big for my lap, or at least for rolling around in it the way he does, and therefore one hand is constantly occupied with trying to hold on to him, to keep him from rolling right out of my lap and falling off the chair.

Writing or posting, where I can just type intermittently, this is already a problem. Coding, where I'm thinking of like five things at once and trying to get them all down as fast as possible? Next to impossible.

Sometimes it's shirtless coding/writing/designing in bed! Sometimes it's pantsless coding/you get the drill on couch! Etc. All dependent on the temperature of the day.

My first wife had a sand boa, and I was once tasked with taking said boa to the vet (suspected mouth infection, IIRC) after work. Meanwhile, to keep her warm (and safe from idle curiosity), I coiled her around my waist under a sweatshirt. So, while I wasn't naked or at home that time, I did once work with a not-dog, not-cat animal draped over me.

Did you work from home or did you actually take her to an office building? I can only imagine the fun if you're talking to your boss, and suddenly a snake head pops out of your collar and goes "Ssss!", possibly in an off tone due to mouth infection :D

Office setting. And no hissing at boss (or anyone) that I remember, but I think that at some point during the day I stood and gesticulated at a whiteboard, which must have bothered her enough to shift positions under that sweatshirt.

In work a couple of years ago the boys had a phase where they would gleefully say "naked code review!" whenever they wanted a sanity check/peer review. Fortunately it was only metaphorical nakedness.

I have a dog that doesn't quite drape over me, but insists on licking my toes when I'm coding. It's very distracting, but somehow I've been super productive all this last week, so I DUNNO.

My s.o. stumbles over to the computer without pants upon waking every morning. Sometimes he still has not found his way into them when I come back from work. He will also code naked if there are no clean shirts left. I am far too cold to expose myself to the elements like that, and therefore will often code in bed, or take my blanket to the desk with me (that one only counts as unfit for public viewing because my blanket has teddy bears painting rainbows on it).

I am also missing an option for "with someone else draped over me", which, considering the introductory paragraph, really should be there! (Though it's difficult to do that one except in combination with the "in bed" option. The "naked" option also goes very well with those two :P)

Will admit, this is the main downside to working outside the home, is the thing where I have to wear grownup clothes on the job instead of a t-shirt and yoga pants. Well, sort of grownup clothes: I did buy those sneakers that look like wingtips, to wear on the job, because they crack me up.

C.'s usual tech support provision uniform is boxer briefs and a t-shirt. I insist that he wear some kind of pants because I bought him a nice Herman Miller chair a few years ago.

I don't code, but I'm a stay-at-home writer. :) And I have written in, oh, pretty much every single one of those categories. My husband, who IS a coder, has done the same.

It's not like words or code are going to get infected with naked cooties, dear gods.

I also rarely do coding, these days. I did, however, spend the last part of my work week editing legal briefs and drafting pleadings while in bed, in my pajamas, with coffee, and with the cat draped over my legs. :)
