Yay: Apple is replacing not only my v key, not only the entire keyboard, but the entire keyboard + the top casing of the laptop, thus fixing the asteroid-crater pitted metal where my skin has eaten the metal. I'm actually making use of the extended warranty for once! (And hopefully by the time it's up, DW will be doing well enough that it can buy me a top-of-the-line new laptop...) They've got the gear on order and will do the replacement when it comes in. (Hopefully before I fly to SF this Friday.)

In the meantime, I've hooked up an old USB keyboard that I had kicking around. However, said keyboard is so clunky that the tactile feedback on the keypresses is entirely wrong, as well as the keys being entirely too tall, which slows down my typing tenfold. (I type at around 120wpm at speed.)

Solution: hook up external keyboard, and just reach over to hit the v key when I need it. (Believe it or not, that actually only slows me down to about 75wpm instead of the 40wpm or so that the external got me down to.) But seriously, couldn't it have been any key other than the one that you need to paste?

Boo: I won the Commit & Ditch Pony not once, not twice, but three times over in this week's code push. :(

Hey, as long as they didn't confiscate your laptop for a week, you're ahead (every time I need repairs, they ship my computer to Lake Oswego. I like living in a mid-sized city, I really do, except when they take my computer away. That makes me distinctly grumpy.)

It has been years since I've tested my typing speed; I wonder what it's like nowadays....

::wincing:: My best friend kills watches, but I also have a friend who kills laptops. In about a year.

I assume the Apple store will rescue your keyboard before long, but if you'd like a working spare to keep kicking around, I have an iMac USB keyboard. When I bought the iMac, I asked for the extended keyboard with the 10 key pad, and they just tossed it in for free, so I have the regular keyboard as a spare.

thus fixing the asteroid-crater pitted metal where my skin has eaten the metal.

Oh hey, a worse case of that than mine — my skin just ate the lacquer off the valve casings on my trumpet, way back when I still played.
