Between all the things you need to take into consideration in making your own instance and the owner of Mastodon's main instance advertising a news site with loads of right-wing dog whistles, I feel like the simplest solution is "don't bother with Mastodon". Makes me even less enthusiastic about the idea that the fediverse (rather than more free webhosting and the return of personal sites) could be the future of the Internet.
