I recall LJ seeming to be very much in the open source movement/community back around 1999 when when Advogato.org was the cool thing. Every second person there seemed to be hacking on LJ. But that was a long time ago, and certainly by the time I joined LJ in 2002 I wasn't seeing that any more.
