I'm half tempted by the CSV one myself, but I keep dithering--I wouldn't want to force somebody to have to download a CSV for each question, although nice to have the capacity, but would it be appropriate to make a zip on the fly for multiple spreadsheets for the poll?

Oh, the way I was going to implement it was going to be straight-up CSV, no formatting, etc -- a ?mode=csv on the end of the poll URL or whatever, returning just a flat text file:

username1,q1a,q2a,q3a,q4a
username2,q1a,q2a,q3a,q4a
username3,q1a,q2a,q3a,q4a

...etc.

That way people can just hit that URL, save-as in the browser, and have the raw data, and do whatever processing they need client-side.

Oooh, that makes sense, I was thinking about things the wrong way--how would you format multichoice questions, multiple columns I'm guessing with 1/0s or some other boolean indicator?

Hm. I don't know enough about SPSS and other type programs to know what would be best, but since I've been thinking mostly about doing most of the responses in boolean terms anyway, I think that'd probably be best.

The more I think about it, the more I think that maybe header rows are the best (with the poll question type and the number of possible responses), and for polls with multichoice, add an additional header, maybe? Say questions 1-2 are radio buttons, question 1 having two possible answers, question 2 having 5 possible answers, question 3 is a tickybox with three possible responses, and question 4 is a radio button with 2 possible answers, I'd return something like:

"username",q1title (radio - 2),q2title (radio - 5),q3title (check - 3), , , ,q4title (radio - 2)
, , , ,q3a1,q3a2,q3a3, ,
username,1,4, ,1,0,0,2
username,2,2, ,0,1,1,1


Except then there'd always be that blank column (under 'question3title' in this case). What do you think?

I kind of know R, although not well enough I think to design the most efficient input mechanism for analysis.

I don't really think radios need to be separated into possible responses, do they, since only one is on at a time? You could just put the value down in the cell instead. OBVIOUSLY I MUST GO SLEEP.

I guess for multiples we could repeat the title with the answer for each column heading?

Them'd be some awfully long column names. (Although is that really a concern? Hrm.)

Yeah, they would be. But there's no telling how long the choices are going to be anyway, so not much good in making them short. I guess we could always abbreviate in the CSV and make another downloadable file listing the columns?

Or make the CSV headers be question # and the first X characters of the question (or, in the case of checkboxes, the first X/2 characters of the question and X/2 characters of the answer) and the user could look at the full version on the poll itself.
