Occasionally (when I remember to) I take a snapshot of the site's statistics for future reference and comparison (in the future we'll have historical stats as well as present-day stats -- the data's there, there's just no pretty frontend for the comparisons yet). I was doing that tonight, and I figured, for shits and giggles it might be neat to present a "then and now" comparison.

Behind the cut: a table with comparison figures for three time periods, as close to one year apart as I have the data.

Statistic1 Jun 201026 May 201115 Feb 2012
Total personal accounts 58,895 91,532 206,780
Total identity accounts 442,007 773,193 1,257,049
Total community accounts N/A 12,208 20,250
Total feed accountsN/A 15,445 21,010
Active in last 24h 5,739 4,535 16,655
Active in last 7d 15,292 11,337 44,334
Active in last 30d 26,482 22,374 113,889
Paid accounts (%/total, %/active users)1,850 (0, 6)* 2,006 (1.9, 9.8) 7,221 (3.2, 9.9)
Premium accounts (%/total, %/active users)765 (0, 2)* 657 (0.6, 3.2)1,519 (0.7, 2.1)

* We only started reporting the paid account percentages down to tenths of a percent somewhere after 1 Jul 2010, so the numbers for 1 Jun are rounded to whole percentages.

So, there are more people active in the last 24 hours today than there were active in the last week on 1 Jun 2010 and more people active in the last 7d today than there were in the last 30d on 1 Jun 2010, and we have over four times the paid accounts and over twice the premium paid accounts today as we did two years ago. I do find it fascinating that the paid account percentages as taken across both the whole userbase and the active userbase have remained mostly the same, even as the raw numbers have grown by leaps and bounds!

I'm not surprised that the activity stats had comparatively dropped between 2010 and 2011, because the 2010 stat was really close to the open beta rush, and the people who were going to drop within 1-2 months were still active.

Yeah, the intial "land grab" was definitely a factor there! (Although remember, open beta was May 2009 -- that drop-off is mostly people having wandered away after the first year.)

I don't understand what "$/total" means. Would you mind explaining?

Er, typo. That should be %/total, %/active (percentage of all personal accounts, percentage of all active personal accounts)

Fixing!

That makes more sense.

P.S. There is still a typo on the Premium accounts line.

I assume the identity accounts are OpenID accounts (read: mostly the livejournal IDs of people with imported comments on journals that were imported).

Identity accounts are OpenID stuff, so they're mostly created when people import. Personal accounts are actual people that have come and signed up.

That's a massive step up in the last year.

Does "active" mean "posted", "commented", or "read"?

Active means active in any way: logged in, posted, commented, loaded reading page.

Aaah, that makes most sense. Any user that uses resources.

And in that case the "paid percentage" is even better than I thought!

That is fantastic. I assume the plan is that eventually there'll be sufficient money to bring Mark back onboard full time.

Yes! The number is higher for him since he's in the Bay Area and has a newborn and a stepkid, but that's definitely the plan.

We should chat sometime. I am aiming to reexamine things in about a year, and that includes a pretty interesting plan for moving somewhere away from the Bay Area. Which means this may be a very attainable goal.

Yes, yes, yes. I would love to be on Dreamwidth fulltime. If nothing else, this thing where I have a day job that is a good bit more than 40 hours a week, a newborn, a two year old, a partner, friends and hobbies, and have to find time in the middle of everything for Dreamwidth...

It's a little exhausting. So worth it, and I wouldn't trade Dreamwidth for the world, but it would be nice to slow down sometime. (On the other hand, maybe by this point I'm kind of addicted to the speed. I'm not sure.)

I love the paid percentage because what it says about engagement and the relationship between what people want from an account and what you're selling. I ran across the ED entry on DW the other day—not updated since 09—and laughed. And then laughed some more.

The stat that gets me really giddy is how much steeper the actives curve is than the new accounts curve. People aren't just signing up, they're STICKING AROUND, which also accords with what I've been seeing. Hurrah!

I'm really happy to see DW becoming more...populated (because heck yeah, sometimes it got lonely around here - especially after experiencing the sheer over-population of Teh LJ back in the day, and the moar, the merrier, I say)...and for the big uptick in paid/premium accounts. 'Tis all quite delightful to behold. Thanks for sharing the stats and moar power (and gold yarn) to you. :)
